Abstract:
The forests around Subic are one of the few remaining undisturbed forests in Luzon that face the South China Sea. The lowlands around Subic Bay Forest Reserve are now predominantly agricultural land and human settlements. The lower slopes of the mountains are covered by grasslands and croplands and secondary growth. Old growth forest is mainly confined to the steep slopes and gullies at higher altitudes. Lowland dipterocarp forest is found at circa 100-900 meters and montane forest above about 900 meters. Much of this forest was formerly included in the Subic Military Reservation, which was under US Navy control until 1993 when it was turned over to the Philippine Government. The portion of the Subic Military Reservation under the control of the US navy was well protected. Under a new administration, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, there is a boom of new industries within the reservation. The former military base has been transformed into a center for trade and industry.
Abstract birding:
Birding is easy in all visited sites and a guide is certainly not needed! The Subic Bay Forest Reserve is a very good start for birding around the Philippines with some excellent birding opportunities. It is also good place where one can get acclimatized to the tropical Philippine climate. Transportation (taxi) is no problem here and could be easily arranged at the hotel. Most of the taxi drivers know all the visited sites. Only getting to Hill 394 could be a problem.
Transport from Manila to Olongapo City, Zambales:
- Ferry: Mt. Samat Ferry Terminal (CCP complex/center) at Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City, Manila to Orion pier, Bataan (1-1.5 hrs). The Mt Samat ferry from Manila to Orion departs six times a day. The first one is at 6:30 am.;
- Tricycle, Orion pier to Balanga bus terminal (30-45 minutes);
- Bus, Balanga to Olongapo City (2 hrs).
Alternative transport from Manila to Olongapo City:
- Bus ("Victory Liner"), several buses a day from Manila (3-5 hrs).

Hill 394
Location: Hill 394, Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBF), Zambales.
Abstract: Lowland dipterocarp forest.
Difficulty: Easy.
Transport: Take a taxi to Subic Botanical Garden (you will see a sign on the left side of the junction. Turn right to Ocean Adventure and go straight on to Morong gate). Turn left at the junction (the Botanical Garden is on your left after 50 meters) and after about 2 km, turn right at the first T-junction. At the end of the road, turn left at the T-junction. After 150 meters you will see the first old weapon silo on your right side. Stop at the last silo and the trail to the top of Hill 394 is just before the end of the silo turning to the right.
Remarks: After birding on Hill 394, it’s advisable to check the small strip of forest between the 2 groups of silos. Green Racquet-tail and Blackish Cuckoo-shrike were seen here. From the silos walking back to the Botanical Garden, Spotted Buttonquail, Blue-breasted Quail and Plain Bush-hen were observed.
Road to Nabasan Beach
Location: Nabasan Beach, SBF, Zambales.
Abstract: Lowland dipterocarp forest and scrub forest.
Difficulty: Easy.
Transport: Drive to the Morong gate direction. About 800 m BEFORE the junction, Morong gate/Botanical garden/Ocean Adventure turn right (there is a sign with Nabasan Beach on it).
Remarks: Just start walking from the main road (Corregidor Highway) to the beach. There is an asphalt road going right and left after 150 meters. This site produced some excellent sightings of Sooty Woodpecker, Blue-naped Parrot and Rufous Coucal.
Cubi Hospital (Old hospital)
Location: Cubi Hospital, SBF, Zambales.
Abstract: Lowland dipterocarp forest and degraded forest around the old hospital.
Difficulty: Easy.
Transport: Drive to the Morong gate direction. Turn left (uphill) at the first junction after Subic Techno Park (Appari Road). After about 1,5 km (at the end of the road), you will see the (old) hospital. About 100 meters before the entrance/gate, you will see a trail. Birding was done from this trail (there is also a trail going downhill to Boton waterfalls, about 100 meters from the main road).
Remarks: Birding was productive here but not as easy as on Hill 394 and Nabasan Beach Road. Just start walking from the road. Forest along the trail is mostly degraded with some open sections with bamboo (check for Green-faced Parrotfinch!) and climbers. Excellent views of Red-crested Malkoha, Blue-naped Parrot and Coleto around the hospital. Walking down from the hospital to Subic Bay Satellite System could yield sightings of Green Racquet-tail and Luzon Tarictic.
Triboa Bay Mangrove Park
Location: Triboa Bay, SBF, Zambales.
Abstract: Mangrove forest and scrub forest.
Transport: Drive to the Morong gate direction. The Mangrove Park is about 1 km after the Bat Kingdom (without any flying foxes anymore, they have their roosting sites at the Nav Mag gate now) on your right side.
Difficulty: Easy.
Remarks: Not many shorebirds during my visit. Only the Philippine duck was sighted.
