Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Mindanao)

Abstract:
Lake Sebu lies on the flank of the Daguma Range in the south-western part of South Cotabato. The flanks of the surrounding mountains are still covered with closed canopy broadleaf forests and second growth forest, some lowland forest remains on the lower mountains slopes. Most of the forest has been converted into permanent agricultural plots. Lake Sebu is a small (350 ha) freshwater lake and associated marshes on flank of the rugged mountains. The lake is surrounded by grassland. The lake is used for fishing, duck raising and the harvesting of freshwater shrimps and snails. Sitio Siete near Lake Sebu is a popular site for birdwatchers, with trails up into the mossy forests above the village, and there are many recent records there of several endemic species.

Lake Sebu
Location: Poblacion, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Mindanao).
Abstract: A freshwater lake consists of three adjacent mountain lakes. Lake Sebu is the largest among the three lakes. The lake is used for fish farming, duck raising and the harvesting of freshwater shrimps and snails. More than one half of the land around the lake is cultivated for agriculture.
Remarks: one group of Philippine Ducks was found on the lake, no Wandering Whistling-Ducks. Recent (December 2008) sightings of Philippine Eagle (adult and immature individuals) flying over the lake.

Sitio Siete
Location: Tasiman, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Mindanao).
Abstract: Mountain forest and mossy forest complex, close to Sitio Siete at 1000+ meters. Sitio Siete is at the end of the dirt road.
Remarks: It's a roughly 45 minutes ride by motorcycle from Poblacion to Sitio Siete. The trail into the forest goes straight up the mountain, starting point of the trail is opposite a sari-sari shop in the "center" of Sitio Siete. It's a two-three hours hike on a slippery, steep and leech infested trail to reach the mossy forest. Another (overgrown) trail starts at the end of the dirt road and will lead you through agricultural plots and patches of forest, and after one hour you will reach the edge of some good mountain forest. Registration is necessary at the sitio captain's house, just behind (going up) the basketball court. The captain will also provides a guide.
Accommodation Sitio Siete: It's also possible to spend one or more night(s) in a local family's home; the Sunego family, who also runs the sari-sari shop, can offer you some very basic sleeping accommodation.

Dongon 7 Waterfalls
Location: Lake Lahit, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Mindanao).
Abstract: Dongon 7 Waterfalls is a series of river drops along the lush mountain forests of Lake Sebu. Mostly degraded lowland forest is found in the valley and around the falls. Some amenities are near the first waterfalls.
Remarks: This site is popular with tourists, so better avoid visiting this site for instance during Holy Week. It's a 5-10 minute ride by motorcycle from Punta Isla Resort to Dongon 7 Waterfalls. There is an entrance fee of 10 peso per person.

Traankini
Location: Lamlahak, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato (Mindanao).
Abstract: Mainly (degraded) lowland forest complex with a few trails.
Remarks: To reach this site take the dirt road opposite the first sari-sari shop and after crossing the same stream three times you will arrive after 15-30 minutes a group of huts (= Traankini). From here a trail will go uphill and will enter the forest.
